Island Medical Facilities
Fiji does offer a variety of medical facilities to meet the needs of people on the islands. The 2 main hospitals are the Lautoka Hospital in the city of the same name on the largest island Viti Levu where the Colonial War Memorial Hospital is also located in the capital of Suva.
In Suva there is also a private hospital that offers Western-style treatment and houses the Fiji Recompression Chamber for the many scuba divers in the area. Numerous other hospitals and clinics are sprinkled throughout the island, though emergency response, outpatient care, and ambulance service is limited.
Emergencies and serious illness and injury may require a transfer to a hospital in the U.S., Australia, or New Zealand.
Though there is still work to be done, encouraging new develops, such as the Dialysis Center spearheaded by the Kidney Foundation of Fiji, are signs of improvement.
